With the release of the free Lotta Love Blocks pattern, I’ve got all things Valentine’s on the brain. And there’s no shortage of heart-themed projects available on the blog, so if you’re looking to celebrate the holiday this month or anytime you want to show some love, read on!

It’s no secret that hearts are a classic motif in quilting and for good reason. At its core, quilting is an act of making that lets us produce a tangible, tactile expression of our love for ourselves or others. Of course, that sometimes takes the form of the most classic symbol of love — the heart. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I thought it would be fun to put together some Heart of Hearts mockups that would be a joy to create any time of year. With the 4th of July just around the corner here in the U.S., I thought it might be fun to share a few mockups of Blue Sky Modern Craft quilts in patriotic-friendly color schemes to inspire your quilt-making creativity. While the heat of summer may not seem like the ideal time for a new quilt, consider turning any of these into a picnic quilt or use lightweight lawns for a deliciously cool quilt perfect for light snuggles.

Just in time for Valentine’s, introducing the Maker’s Heart pattern! After making my Heart of Hearts quilt pattern, I couldn’t get the block out of my brain and kept dreaming of how cute it would be in mini form (because everything’s cuter when you shrink it, right?). And a tiny heart deserves to be nestled into a tiny pincushion, so I couldn’t resist offering you two options for that as well.⁣

While working on the test quilts for my Heart of Hearts pattern, I got the idea to add a little something to the binding. I love to do big-stitch binding because it’s quick and easy and adds another noticeable handmade touch to my quilts, but I wanted to incorporate another element into the binding to make it even more special. So I thought, why not hearts? I was so pleased with the result that I put together a little video to show you how to do it, too!

It’s time for a roundup of the other test quilts that went into making the Heart of Hearts pattern! The cover quilt is sweet and pink, but if that’s not your thing, no worries because the pattern can go in so many directions.

Sewing creates a lot of scraps. I’ve always been one to hold on to almost every scrap I make, but of course, more often than not, they just wind up in a scrap basket and are never touched or seen from again. When I was working on the quilts for my Heart of Hearts pattern, I noticed the cutest little pile of color scraps accumulating on the corner of my cutting mat and knew it was the perfect opportunity to make some precious little pincushions.
