Looking for a New 4th of July Quilt? We’ve Got You Covered.

With the 4th of July just around the corner here in the U.S., I thought it might be fun to share a few mockups of Blue Sky Modern Craft quilts in patriotic-friendly color schemes to inspire your quilt-making creativity. While the heat of summer may not seem like the ideal time for a new quilt, consider turning any of these into a picnic quilt with a canvas backing or use lightweight lawns for the the quilt top and thin bamboo batting for a deliciously cool quilt perfect for light snuggles.

Up first is the OG Folded in Love quilt. You may recognize that mockup above on the right as the one I used for the Modern Service Quilts (MSQ) version of the pattern. MSQ is an organization I co-founded with two friends to help encourage and inspire the making of more service or honor quilts in a modern quilting style. Each month, we highlight a different designer and quilt pattern, which we re-make in a style befitting a modern honor quilt. The Folded in Love pattern made its debut last November as an MSQ pattern of the month. Its design was based on the MSQ logo, which hearkens to the idea of a gently folded flag. With that in mind, how great is the mockup above on the left? It really draws out that flag idea but in a completely modern and striking way.

These Folded in Love mockups were made by MSQ’s web designer, Christine Boyd, for the original MSQ release, and they’re just too good not to share again. You can read all about the MSQ Folded in Love quilt here and the original cover version of the quilt here.

The Folded in Love pattern is available in the shop.

Up next is Heart of Hearts. The original release fully embraced the sweetness of the heart symbol in a palette of pinks, yellows, and soft greens, but an honor quilt is meant to evoke the love and gratitude you have for the recipient, and what better symbol is there for that than a heart? Depending on the colors you use from the red, white, and blue color scheme, this quilt could appeal to a range of tastes and likes.

This pattern comes in four sizes, all the way up to twin and queen, so it provides lots of options depending on the use. The throw size would make a great picnic blanket, and the twin, which adds those fun dashes above and below the heart (shown in the red and cream version above), would be a lovely size for a covering every inch of those toes while relaxing on the couch.

The Heart of Hearts pattern is available in the shop.

Finally, Strip Dash gets its moment in the sun! This quick, easy, jelly roll-friendly pattern would be a perfect summer quilt. Find yourself an ombre solids jelly roll and combine it with a coordinating background for a weekend sew that you can take to the beach by Monday. This Kona Solids Patriotic collection jelly roll* — with four different reds, four different blues, and four neutrals — was absolutely made for this quilt. Or check out this all-blue version*!

I love how bringing in some tans and neutrals take the reds and blues in these mockups to a new level of sophistication. In fact, the original cover quilt embraced an ombre of tans for most of the blocks in the quilt. Changing the background in that version to navy or a great chambray and subbing in reds for the citron prints would be a fabulous take on the patriotic theme.

The Strip Dash pattern is available in the shop.

If you’re looking for even more inspiration, you can find all of the quilt patterns featured by Modern Service Quilts on their website.
