Heart of Hearts Release Day!
With plenty of time left to create your very own Valentine’s quilt for someone special — especially if that someone is you! — I’m so excited to release my newest pattern, Heart of Hearts!
Heart of Hearts was one of those designs that comes to you in a flash, and you just have to start drawing it out immediately to see if it will work. I loved the idea of a heart made up of hearts, simple as that. The geometry of the squared-off hearts and large negative space make this a fun, modern take on the classic heart quilt.
The pattern is layer-cake friendly, too, which I’m really excited about. I don’t find many layer-cake patterns out there, but it’s such a fun and potentially useful pre-cut. And don’t worry, the fabric requirements include options for fat quarters / fat eighths (depending on the size) plus yardage and scraps, too, so you’re set no matter what you’re looking to use.
I’ll be writing another blog post all about the saga of the cover quilt soon, but basically, I made an entire other quilt that I just love in person but that I simply couldn’t seem to photograph well due to the tricky colors, so I made the decision to pivot to a whole new cover quilt. And I have to say, I’m pretty darn smitten. These sweet hearts were the perfect opportunity to break into a big bundle of the First Light collaborative collection by Ruby Star Society that I treated myself to back before the holidays. These prints and colors hit all the right notes for me. For the background, I paired them with a new Ruby Star basic, Hole Punch Dot in Orchid by Kim Kight. I suspect I’m going to be using that one a lot. It’s the perfect alternative to your standard dot.
The cover quilt is the Throw size. It was pieced and bound by me and quilted by Lilo Whitener-Fey of Trace Creek Quilting. The quilting panto is called Rainbow Hearts, and how could I possibly choose anything else for this quilt? I loved it so much I used it on both “cover” quilts, ha! For the backing, I used several half-yard cuts of coordinating prints because I really wanted a bold pop on the back. It’s a nice contrast to the more subtle negative space on the front. For the binding, I went scrappy with more strips of several of the First Light prints. I love how it draws your eye around the quilt.
I finished the quilt off with my favorite big-stitch binding, but this time, I added a little something extra. Stay tuned for a tutorial for these hearts later this week!
The pattern includes four sizes. The Baby and Throw sizes showcase the big heart made of small heart blocks, while the Twin and Queen sizes add super fun dash borders.
I’ve got more posts planned to show off the other versions my tester and I made, so stay tuned to the blog. In the meantime, pick up your copy here to get started on your own version! And be sure to check out my Instagram feed on Wednesday for a great giveaway to celebrate the new release!
