Holiday Sewing Projects Round Up

Wasn’t Thanksgiving, like, yesterday?! I don’t know how we’re already more than a week into December, but here we are. I hope you’ve been able to start embracing the holiday spirit wherever you are. Our family’s already enjoyed a walk through the Christmas lights at our botanical garden, and I am making excellent progress through this year’s slate of Hallmark movies, so I’m calling that a win. We even had snow the weekend of Thanksgiving!

All the lights, peppermint, wintry winds, and sparkles also have me itching to do all the holiday sewing. I never have time to do nearly as much as I’d like, but I do my very best to squeeze in as much as I can. Are you with me? If so, I’m here with a little holiday project round up to inspire you! Let’s get started!

Up first, looking for a quick, colorful, and festive sew you can still finish by Christmas (or enjoy working on for next year)? Then the One Scrappy Santa Quilt and Pillow Pattern is for you! The pattern includes full instructions for a Throw quilt (64” x 67”) and Pillow (18” x 18”) in two versions: Ombré and Scrappy. With more cutting diagrams than you can imagine, you’ll have all the info you need to create a quilt or pillow in either version (yardage and fat quarter friendly / scrappy options) or a matching ombré quilt and pillow set.

Want to make some quick coasters or a pillow, table runner, or garland? Check out the free Christmas Cheer Blocks Pattern! With the simple addition of “H,” “J,” and “Y” blocks to the “O” in my original Boo Blocks pattern, you’re all set for the holidays with blocks that can spell out “HoHoHo” and “Joy.” These blocks also work with the exclamation-point block from the BOO! Blocks pattern, so feel free to add it on for a little extra cheer.

The free pattern includes instructions for turning the blocks into coasters, a JOY pillow, or a HoHoHo table runner. I’m also hoping to turn some of mine into a fun letter banner, but really, the options are endless for these blocks. They’d be such a great addition to a holiday sampler quilt as well! Or what about a tote bag for a teacher holiday gift? I need more time!

For the sewing friends in your life (or yourself!), why not whip up a sweet mini pincushion? My Little Town Mini Pinnies tutorial is perfect for fabric fussy cutting or putting your treasured scraps to use, or check out my Maker's Heart Pincushion Pattern, which incorporates the sweetest little heart into two different pincushion styles. Personalize each one with just the right fabrics for the recipient, then pair it with a good pair of scissors (these curved embroidery scissors from Havel’s Sewing** are my absolute favorites), some embroidery supplies, or your favorite hand-sewing needles, and you’ve got a great little gift set.

**I’m a proud brand ambassador for Havel’s Sewing but would swear by these scissors regardless. You can always use code "blueskycrafter7" on the Havel’s site to get $7 off orders of $25 or more.

(And if you run out of time to make your own, you can find a large selection made by me in the shop!)

And bonus! Once you have the Maker’s Heart pincushion pattern, you’re well on your way to being able to make these sweet Maker’s Heart Mini Pouches with my free tutorial! Perfect as a gift on their own, they’re also a sweet way to wrap up small gifts — think teacher items, jewelry, toys, you name it! They would be so cute in Christmas fabrics!

Picked up a few gift cards this year but want to add a personal touch when gifting them? I’ve got two tutorials for handmade gift-card sleeves, so you can add a little of yourself to your card. This tutorial for felt gift-card envelopes includes three design options that can be sewn up without a machine — perfect for hanging out on the couch watching your favorite Christmas movie (is it Christmas Vacation or Die Hard?).

Or try this tutorial for fabric gift-card sleeves! These are the perfect opportunity to fussy cut some of those adorable holiday fabrics you bought but didn’t get around to putting into a quilt (no shade). You can assemble a whole stack of them in just a few hours, and you’ll be all set for those teacher Starbucks cards you just stocked up on.

Finally, check out this quick and easy tutorial for creating the cutest Mini Foldover Baskets. They make wonderful teacher gifts, stocking stuffers, toy storage, even covers for plant pots! Going to a holiday party? These would be the sweetest hostess gifts filled with some holiday baked treats or holding a small poinsettia! Make them in a neutral color palette, and the recipient can enjoy them year round!

So, what’s on your holiday sewing wish list?
