Folded in Love Baby Quilts

I want to begin by saying “thank you!” to the supporters who’ve already purchased a copy of the Folded in Love pattern. It means so much to know that people like the design and want to make one of their own. I hope you’ll continue to be excited about the other patterns I have planned for the coming months. Now, let’s get to the pretty stuff, shall we?

I and a few friends ended up making 10 samples of the Folded in Love quilt during testing, so how about we dig down into the baby ones today. These three were all made by me and really show off the versatility of the pattern.

The first one is about as bold and modern as it comes. It also shows off a fun scrappy take on the pattern because I substituted a variety of black and white prints for Colors 1-4 in the pattern, using the bright citron green star print as the background. These fabrics were all gifted to me by my uber talented friend Sarah, and I was so happy I had enough to use for the sample. One of the great things about the pattern is that the Baby size requires really small amounts of fabric, and you could almost certainly pull it all from your stash for a quick weekend make.

The super fun pop of teal in the binding is Kaleidoscope Plaid in Denim by Alison Glass. These plaids are my new favorite fabrics to use in bindings because the colors are so good, and the plaid design adds some great movement and interest. I used this same plaid on one of the sample throw quilts and plan to use the pink and purple versions on two other quilts I have waiting to bind. The background is a classic, Scribble Notes in Charcoal by Carolyn Friedlander, a fabric I love so much I bought an entire bolt of it. I have no regrets. My wonderful friend Lilo of Trace Creek Quilting longarm quilted this one using the Pennants pantograph, and it’s the perfect amount of movement. And just look at that citron thread! All the heart eyes.

For the second one, I stuck to the standard color layout in the quilt and went super soft and sweet. I adore the new colors that were released this fall in Ruby Star Society’s Add It Up basics line and couldn’t wait to use them in a quilt. Colors 1-4 in this sample are Add It Up by Alexia Abegg in Chambray, Polar, Strawberry, and Citron. The background is Stitch and Repeat in Lace by Cotton + Steel, another great basic. I love a good low volume with some interest.

Lilo also quilted this one using the sweetest little panto ever called Ragtime Hearts. For the backing, I pulled in some of the Add It Up fabric in Chambray from the front of the quilt and combined it with a Carolina gingham in Fog from my stash. I feel like gingham is always the perfect backing for a baby quilt; it’s just so classic.

Spoiler, the third baby quilt isn’t actually done yet, but the top is finished, so you can get an idea. For this one, I used an aqua dessert roll (a precut of 5” x WOF strips) I had from Moda and cut down the strips for the pattern size. (Note if you try this route, there’s one color strip in the Baby that’s longer than width of fabric, so I “cheated” on that one and added a few inches from another strip to get the length I needed. This was a small dessert roll, and there weren’t any duplicate strips, so the print I added on is different, but you can hardly tell, especially since I kept the colors so consistent on this one.) For the background, I used Essex Yarn-Dyed Linen in Aqua, another personal favorite. This one is destined for my new little niece, who’s due next month, and I can’t wait to see her snuggled up in it!

So what ideas do you have brewing for your own version now? As fun as this pattern is in the Throw size, it really is the perfect quickie baby quilt. The fabric requirements are stash friendly, and the pattern includes info for making it scrappy if you want. You could easily finish it in a weekend and have it in the arms of a happy recipient by Monday.

You can find the pattern in my shop here.

And if you love the first two quilts so much you just HAVE to have them, they’re actually for sale in the shop, too. Lovingly made by hand from me for you.

(Thanks to the wonderful Angela Armstrong for most of the photographs in this post!)
