Fabric Palette Friday #18: Mauvelous
Happy Fabric Palette Friday! This week, I thought we’d go all solids in a palette that would be as at home in a Valentine’s quilt as in a floral spring quilt or an early fall, cozy-up-on-the-couch quilt. It’s sweet but not saccharine, comforting but not dull, classic but with a modern feel. Like one of the colors it contains, I’m calling it Mauvelous.
It’s actually a pull I’ve had set aside for a future pattern release, so hopefully you’ll see it in action in the not-too-distant future, but it was one that came about from playing around with my Art Gallery color card. If you’re looking to work with solids, it’s truly worth investing in a color card of your favorite solid brands. Colors on a computer screen can’t be trusted, so having a color card at home lets you see what the fabric actually looks like in real life before committing to buying yards of it. If you’re brave enough to cut yours apart, you can then play around with all the swatches to find palettes you like, as I did with this one.
These are Art Gallery Pure Solids in Field of Lavender, Lavander Water, Mauvelous, Sweet Fig, and Verve Violet. (Wouldn’t you love to be the person who gets to name fabric solids or crayon colors?)
Have you been brave enough to cut up a color card? You can find my favorites here:
Kona Cotton Color Card (look for one that contains 365 colors as of May 2022)
Art Gallery Pure Solids Color Card (look for one that contains 135 colors as of May 2022)
I love to use Essex wovens, so I’ve found that color card to be extremely helpful as well (though I haven’t cut it apart).
(These are not affiliate links, just fabric stores I’ve purchased from and like.) Fabric companies are always adding additional colors to their solids lines, so you’ll often come across older color cards that don’t include all of the current colors, which is why I’ve mentioned the current totals above. Also, when they do release new colors, they generally make a small color card with just those new colors, so you can purchase these to add to your collection to keep up to date.
You can also find color cards for Moda Bella, Michael Miller Cotton Couture, and RJR Cotton Supreme solids; various basics lines from Moda and Riley Blake; and various thread lines, including Aurifil and DMC embroidery thread, among others. Fat Quarter Shop carries a very large selection.
