Meet the Emaline Quilt!
I cannot believe how long it’s been since I popped into this space. Let’s just say it was a crazy spring around here: trips to Scotland, QuiltCon, and Louisville; getting shingles (I’m 40, and it was terrible, let me tell you); my mom falling down our stairs and breaking her leg the day we came home from Scotland; kids in all the activities; piles of work… you see where I’m going.
But I’m here and oh so excited to announce my latest pattern, Emaline, is in the newest issue of Make Modern magazine! If you don’t already subscribe, Make Modern is an awesome digital quilting magazine based in Australia (don’t worry, the measurements all use inches). Released every other month, each issue is packed with quilt patterns and interesting articles. This was my second time working with the Make Modern team, and they’re just so wonderful.
Emaline was the result of a design play session in Illustrator, where I just wanted to see what would happen if you rotated sub-units within a block that had sashing and then rotated the entire blocks within the final layout. These blocks are so very easy to construct — the units are all made with strip piecing — but the final result is a puzzling feast for the eyes.
The Throw quilt finishes at 60 ½” square. In my version, I used Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton solids in Ballerina, Sage, Teal Blue, Dusty Blue, Willow, Gumdrop, and Snow. I simply adore this unique color combo. Just a tip: because of how the quilt is assembled, solids and non-directional prints work best.
The design was topped off with longarm quilting by the ever-fabulous Lilo Whitener-Fey of Trace Creek Quilting using the Wallpaper Fan pantograph by Barbie Mills of The Quilting Mill, then I finished it with my favorite big-stitch binding.
And what about the rest of the issue? Well, let me tell you, it’s chock full of quilty goodness.
