Liven Up Your Couch with the One Scrappy Santa Pillow

Thank you so much for all the love on the One Scrappy Santa pattern! I really fell in love with it, and I’m glad you all did, too! I often get help when making my quilt-release samples, but this pattern is so quick, easy, and fun that I handled them myself this time around, and I had a great time doing it. In this post, I want to tell you all about the pillow!

As I mentioned in the last blog post, the pattern includes full instructions for a Throw quilt (64" x 67") and Pillow (18" x 18") in two versions: Ombré and Scrappy. You can make them in any combination you like, but the pattern includes special cutting instructions if you want to make a coordinating ombré quilt and pillow set. With some tweaks to the cutting (details in the pattern), you can actually get all the pieces for both projects from the yardage listed for the quilt! Now that’s a win! The set would make the sweetest Christmas gift for a loved one or, let’s face it, yourself!

For the ombré cover quilt and coordinating pillow, I used a variety of colors from V and Co.’s Ombré Flurries* collection:

(Tip: This line would also look amazing in the scrappy version of the quilt or pillow. Check out the fat quarter bundle here!)

Can you believe all that color variety came from just seven fabrics? These ombré fabrics really are amazing.

Of course, offering a pillow for a design like this isn’t just about putting the same block on a square. Everything needed to be sized down to look right on the 18” finished surface, which took a good bit of tweaking, especially getting the right proportions for that snowball poof on top of Santa’s hat!

The pattern includes full instructions (with photos!) for making a simple envelope backed pillow cover, as well as links to my preferred pillow forms. While the pieces may be small, it’s all very beginner friendly — even those half-rectangle triangles, I promise!

For the quilting, I kept it simple with a diagonal crosshatch design spaced about 1.5” apart in a silvery gray thread. I rarely quilt my own quilts anymore, so it was nice to tackle a small project like this to warm up my quilting muscles. When I machine quilt, I like to lengthen my stitch length to about 3.0 to make the stitches pop a bit more. This pillow would look so cute with some hand quilting as well!

If you’re not going for the ombré look and plan on just making the pillow (without the coordinating quilt), the small pieces of this design mean it’s tailor made for using up your holiday scraps, so dig into that bin and go wild!

If you missed it, be sure to check out the pattern release blog post, which includes all the details about the ombré cover quilt. And look ahead for one more post all about the scrappy quilt version I made! Grab your copy of the pattern HERE to get started on your own version right now!
