Fabric Palette Friday #27: Gentle Dusk
Happy Fabric Palette Friday! Goodness, it’s been awhile since we’ve met up here on the blog. It’s been a busy time behind the scenes, so I hope you’ll forgive me and are excited about lots of fun new content on the horizon. This week’s palette stemmed from a new applique project I’ve begun as part of Carolyn Friedlander’s sew-along for her Bow pattern. I picked up a copy of the pattern at QuiltCon and have been itching to dive in for months, so when she announced the sew-along, I didn’t put up much of a fight before signing up.
The sizes of the pieces in Bow lend themselves well to scraps, so I dove straight into my scrap bin and started pulling a range of aquas, teals, and pinks, along with several chambrays to add texture and interest. I mostly focused on small-scale prints, which allows you to include lots of prints without the palette getting too complicated visually. Too many large-scale prints quickly gets overwhelming and leads to fabrics fighting for your attention in the final composition. These colors make me think of a gentle summer dusk, with the sky turning every shade of calming blues, pinks, and purples. Makes you want to lie on your back in a soft meadow and just stare up at the sky, doesn’t it?
